CONFLICT
STATEMENT OF INTENT
I aim to produce a website of work demonstrating my ideas, developing my work around the theme 'depression & self harm'. I will choose a specific photographer to get my inspiration for my website.
For my initial research I will begin by looking into different types of depression and self harm photographers. So far, I have researched Don McCullings different kinds of photos around the theme poverty. I took quite a lot of inspiration from the pictures I have researched. I have chosen Don because he clearly demonstrates different ways of looking at conflict and how others around the world live.
When I chose this theme, my thoughts were to create self harm marks and scratches on someones arm with fake blood and make up. After thinking deeply about it I then realized there is so much more to take pictures of, such as someone sitting in a dark room on the floor with there heads facing down, also using dark make up to show bruises on the face and other marks to show different kinds of depression and self harm.
To show more progression and creativity I will then use Photoshop to develop my work further, I will try out different types of filters and use real life facts to produce a poster, to get the message across and to make others aware of people that are suffering from depression. After that I then hope to go even further and take more pictures to show self harm and depression, I have many ideas running through my head that will propel me into the right direction for photography.
In the future I would like to use different techniques with my photographs, I would like to capture photos using depth of field and different types of shutter speed. I want to go further in being creative and trying out new things with Photoshop to increase in my knowledge.
I have 8-10 weeks to produce a final website around the theme self harm and depression. I will do my research and find out in the first couple of week and start capturing my pictures and making posters out of them to show progression in my work.
As I carry on working on this project I will keep developing my ideas to make my work better, also I will seek work and a lot of help from my teachers and my peers to help push my self to achieve the highest possible grade that I can get. The things that don't go so well I will improve on my mistakes and try to make try to make them better to get a better grade.
How to analyse a picture using the 5C's
CONTENT- The structure that is in this picture is a diagonal line going down the family showing that the picture has been carefully captured. In my opinion this picture looks quite new to me because it looks quite modern and the camera quality is clear showing us exactly was is happening in this picture. In this picture the colours are dull and not bright this is showing us that the people have escaped from war and are poor. This picture looks like that it has been taken in Europe. In the background of this picture there is a small house and walking in front are 3 people walking in mud and grass.
CONNECTION- The theme of this is picture is war because they look like they are refugees escaping from war because they are holding luggage in there hands also the mother and farther and the boy in this picture are looking down, looking upset and looks like they are escaping from something really tragic that is happening to them. This image links to our work because they are in poverty and the environment doesn't look good or healthy. The message behind this picture is telling us how people are living in war and it could be telling us to think about them and donate money to them.
COMPOSITION- The photographer has used rule of third while taking this picture 1/3 of the picture is the sky and 2/3 of the picture is the muddy ground. In this picture the lightning is quite harsh and hard this shows that the picture isn't a happy picture and something good happening it shows that something could be wrong. The family are close to the camera so your eyes get drawn to the foreground. The women is right in the central of the picture and in the background on the right there is a small house that looks like no one lives there. the photographer focuses right onto the family to catch out attention onto them straight away and to see what is happening to them. The background is a medium depth of field because it is only little in blur and is mainly focused onto the family. The photographer has used a harsh setting and scene when he was taking this picture, you can tell by this because of the muddy ground and the place that they are in, also they are holding bags in there hands that suggest that they could be moving from one place to another. The photographer has used fast shutter speed because they have been captured in the perfect movement
CONTEXT- Unicef saves children and also they defend there rights, they also never give up to help the children, most of the children they help they have been born in a conflict life. Every 2 seconds a childs life has been taken because of conflict, more then 16 millions of babies a year are born living in conflict. A lot of refugees and migrant children are on the move but this is a high risk for new born babies and also there mothers. Refugees and migrant flows into Europe remain at an unprecedented high.
COMMENT- This is a strong image for conflict because it has a lot of meaning behind it, it shows us how other people are suffering so this picture makes me feel sympathy for the people that are in this picture, also the dull colours in this pictures gives effect because if they have bright colours it would show a good and happy mood but they have used dull colours to show that they are sad and are living in poverty. The mans face is looking down looking tired and traumatized because of what could be happening in his life, also the mother and child are looking down. The boys face is looking down while he is crying wearing scruffy clothes this could suggest that they could be escaping from war and they have lost all there personal possessions such as there home and clothes and money .I think the meaning behind this picture is to show how other people are living in the world and shows us how lucky we are.

CONTENT- In this picture the people are all sat together on one side besides a mother and her child who is sat on the other side. This could show clearly the 2 families who are living in poverty. This shows that they could be there for each other and other things has happend in there life to end up like this. In my opinion this picture looks quite modern because the picture is captured clear and is focusing on the children and their mothers.
CONNECTION- The theme of this picture is poverty and is showing how other people around the world who are suffering and living in poverty. It is clear that they are living in poverty because they all sat on the ground all sat close to each other. There facial expression shows that they don’t look happy because they are all looking down and looking upset. Also the background behind them indicates that they are not living a luxury life because the walls look broken and the background looks like an old empty place.
COMPOSITION- The photographer has used depth of field in this picture because he has focused on the children and the mother and has left the background a little blurry. In this picture the lighting is quite harsh to show that the picture is not supposed to be a happy mood picture, the picture has a grey and black effect to show that the picture suggests that it is something bad happening in the picture. The photographer has used depth of field on the wall to show clearly what the wall looks like and how it is all broken and and old wall.
CONTEXT- "Don mcculings is an elderly man around 80 years of age, he is a famous photographer for his war and conflict pictures, and at this age he is still working with some of his pictures. Don is a british nationality who was born in london in 1935." (Research From the internet)
COMMENT- In my opinion this is a very strong picture behind it because it has a strong meaning to it. The meaning of this picture is to make us aware of other people and how they would live and how we do, and the differences between our lives. A strength of this image is that is that is shows clearly what is happening is this picture and how they are living and also has a meaning behind it.
PLAN
1st shoot
2nd shoot
3rd shoot
BEST AND WORST
These two images are my best and worst, the reason why it is my worst because it is not in focused and it also has bad lighting as well because it has a black background. However my second picture is much more in focus on the cuts and blood. I used depth of field so the background is not in as focus and the cuts on the arm.
4th shoot
5th shoot process putting a bruise on
5th shoot
best and worst
This is my worst because the picture is not not in focus and also it is all blurry.
This is my best picture because it more in focus and I used depth of field to focus on the hands and the head but keep the rest if the background quite blurry.
6th shoot
7th shoot
Best and Worse
This is my worst picture because, it is not in focus and also it is dark because not enough light has been let in.
This is my best picture from shoot 7 because it is focused on the full picture and focused on the writing.

EVALUATION
The project we started off with was 'conflict'. I did some further research on different types of conflict themes, I then decided to pick self harm and depression as it stood out the most to me as it is rapidly increasing throughout Britain.
Throughout this project the part I enjoyed the most was taking my pictures of my ideas that I got from my research ideas. I really enjoyed creating self harm marks and blood on the arm to show what self harm is and what people really go through. The one technique I used the most was depth of field as I focused the most on the cuts and scabs on the arm and left the background in blur.
During this project the thing I have learnt the most is how to master Photoshop and use the different techniques on developing my posters. I used different filters and effects to make my pictures more effective and also added quotes and real life facts to my poster to make people aware of self harm and depression throughout Britain.
On my next project I would like to go further with my pictures by going to a specific place that is linked to my theme of self harm and depression, to do this I would need to go further with my plan and also would need to take my camera home to develop my pictures further and try out some of my own locations to see what kind has worked the best for me and made my pictures the most effective and what hasn't.
I researched several different kind of photographers to get ideas of different conflict and then realized that it is not always about blood and war, I found out that conflict is also about poverty, bullying, depression (ect). I also looked at conflict posters to make my ideas go further and so I have a good understanding on what conflict is really about and what themes cover the over look of conflict. This helped to shape up my own images my realizing I need to try out many effects and techniques to make my pictures harsh and more effective based on the theme self harm and depression.
During this project I enjoyed being creative with my images and taking them to the next level each time, for example developing my photos with photo shop and adding effect and real life facts about depression and self harm to make others around us aware of it and what is really happening in our society today. Also during this project I enjoyed taking my pictures and using my imagination on making scabs and self harm marks on an arm to show what others can be going through.
During this project I think my final website has been the most successful because I have learnt a lot about different things what is happening in this society and found out facts I didn't know, it has inspired me with my own ideas on my pictures and what I can do to make my images and website better.
If I was ever going to do this project again I would write a different plan and change things around such as the location on where I will take my pictures, because it will then develop my work and make it better.
